Senator Strom Thurmond's Letter In Support Of Joe
February 26, 1999 Honorable Alan "Bud " Selig Commissioner Major League Baseball 350 Park Avenue New York, New York 10022 Dear Commissioner Selig: I am writing to express support for the reinstatement of Joseph Jefferson "Shoeless Joe" Jackson to the game of Major League Baseball. I understand that a petition has been filed with your office regarding reinstatement. "Shoeless Joe" Jackson was one of the greatest baseball players in the history of the major leagues. He was a native of Greenville, South Carolina and his reinstate- ment is a matter of great importance to the people of South Carolina. I have been contacted by many constituents who believe that it is a profound injustice to continue punishment of an innocent man. "Shoeless Joe's" athletic abilities were outstanding during his era, with his .356 lifetime batting average still third on the all-time batting list. His hometown of Greenville has honored him with parks, roads and monuments named in his honor. I believe that he is worthy, not only for reinstatement, but also admission to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In light of the above, your giving every consideration to the petition before you to reinstate "Shoeless Joe" Jackson to major league baseball will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your attention to this important matter. If I can provide further information or be of assistance to you in any way, please do not hesitate to call upon me. With kindest regards and best wishes, Sincerely, Strom Thurmond |
